“‘3 Idiots’ earned 33 crores on first day and we knew the first day of Shikara will be 30 lakh. I make a film in the memory of my mother for 30 lakh collection on first day and some people say I commercialised the pain of Kashmiri Pandits. These people are donkeys,” said Chopra at an event on Tuesday.

Earlier on the day of the release of the film, a woman belonging to the Kashmiri Pandit community broke down and lashed out at Chopra after watching the film at a theatre here where he had come to get a firsthand public review of the film.

Auto Expo 2020: Asia’s biggest motor show ends; draws over 608,000 visitors

Asia’s biggest motor show drew to a close on Wednesday bringing the curtains down on the six-day extravaganza. Even though it fell short of the overall number of participation, it was one of the biggest in terms of partaking by new entrants.

Beating the slowdown that has sapped buyer’s sentiments and hit volumes at auto companies for the past year-and-a-half, a total of 608,526 people visited the show at the Great Noida Expo Mart between February 7 and 12, according to Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (Siam).

With a peek into the future of mobility via green technologies, the exposition included 352 product displays from 108 exhibitors.

This included eight global premiers and over 70 launches and unveils. It also comprised introduction of 35 electric vehicles and 15 concepts.

Though many manufacturers gave the show a miss, those who participated believed in it as a platform to rekindle interest in a slowing market.

Market Ahead, February 13: All you need to know before the Opening Bell

Coronavirus concerns, corporate results, and macro data will be the top triggers for Indian indices today. Investors might turn cautious after China’s Hubei province reported a record rise in the coronavirus death toll on Thursday, as global health experts warned the epidemic could get far worse before it is brought under control. Health officials in Hubei province said 242 people had died from the flu-like virus on Wednesday that brought the total number of deaths in the province to 1,310.

Market participants will also react to macro numbers released post market hours yesterday. Retail inflation in January rose to a multi-year high of 7.59 percent, while industrial output contracted 0.3 percent in December, against a growth of 1.8 percent in November, data showed. The figures might dent investors’ outlook on the revival in the Indian economy.

On the results front, almost 615 companies, including BPCL, Page Industries, Nestle India, and Apollo Hospitals Enterprise, are scheduled to announce their December quarter results today.

Electric cars to remain niche segment in near future, ICE rule to continue

Despite the push for electric vehicles and sustainability, the market share for automobiles will be dominated by internal combustion engine (ICE)-driven cars for at least a decade for a multitude of reasons, top-most of which is the absence of an accompanying charging infrastructure across the nation.

According to research by IHS Markit, for an ecosystem still grappling with infrastructural issues, high costs of EVs and a greater OEM focus on electrifying two-wheelers and commercial vehicles, the share for such vehicles would be at four per cent by 2030. The passenger-car market in India has seen sales volumes of over three million units during the past few years.

A study by Crisil Research shows that by 2024, 43-48 per cent of new three-wheelers (excluding e-rickshaws), and 12-17 per cent of new two-wheelers sold in India will be electric vehicles but traction may be low for four-wheelers, with only five per cent of new sales likely to be Evs.

China virus death toll reaches 1,110; world warned of ‘very grave threat’

The number of fatalities from China’s new coronavirus epidemic jumped to 1,110 nationwide on Wednesday after hard-hit Hubei province reported 94 new deaths.

In its daily update, Hubei’s health commission also confirmed another 1,638 new cases in the central province, where the outbreak emerged in December. There are now more than 44,200 confirmed cases across China, based on previously released figures from the government.

The new virus is believed to have emerged last year in a market that sells wild animals in Hubei’s capital Wuhan, the city at the centre of the outbreak. The virus was officially named “COVID-19” at a conference in Geneva held by the World Health Organization, where the body’s chief said countries had a chance of stopping its global spread.

WHO head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Tuesday that although 99 percent of cases are in China, where it remains “very much an emergency,” it also “holds a very grave threat for the rest of the world.” He urged countries to share data in order to further research the disease.

“We have been saying since the beginning that the upcoming polls will be fought on the basis of work done by us and it is too early. You wait and watch we will register a massive win,” Singh told reporters outside his residence.

Delhi election result LIVE: BJP’s Kapil Mishra leads, AAP’s Atishi trails

Delhi election results LIVE updates: Counting of votes for the Delhi Assembly Election is underway, with the incumbent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leading in 13 and BJP in 11. Postal ballots were counted first. TV exits polls have unanimously predicted that the incumbent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will return to power in Delhi with a comfortable majority, even as polling percentage this time across the 70 Assembly constituencies has declined to 62 per cent from a 67 per cent turnout seen in the 2015 Delhi Assembly election. The AAP had registed a historic win, bagging 67 of the seats.

However, exit polls have not dampened the spirits of challenger Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The party leaders claim that the Delhi election result will surprise everyone as “the saffron party will stake claim to power with a resounding majority”.

Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari on Monday asserted that his party will win 48 seats in the 70-member Assembly and form the next government. “Our confidence is based on a micro analysis of all the seats. The exit polls are only rough estimates. I am confident that the BJP will form the government in Delhi with a full majority,” he said. The BJP campaigned extensively for this election and aggressively raised the anti-CAA protests in Shaheen Bagh as a poll issue. While the Congress was visibly mute, the AAP stressed on its development agenda and progress made by Delhi during its government term.
