Nokia Smart TV 55 review: Pricier than peers but totally worth it

The TV market, once dominated by established electronics brands like Samsung and LG, is now a level playing field. Companies that were traditionally known for smartphones have also jumped on the bandwagon. Among the latest in the fray is home-grown e-commerce platform Flipkart, which has become an official brand licensee for manufacturing and servicing Nokia-branded smart televisions in India.

The Nokia Smart TV 55 is the first product under the Flipkart-Nokia partnership. The TV offers a comprehensive list of features: Google Android 9 operating system, built-in Chromecast and a JBL sound system. Here’s how they come together.

Design 3/5

The Nokia Smart TV 55 might not be the most compact television in its segment, but its design is a marvel in terms of looks and utility. It has a minimal profile, especially on the front, which goes well with most indoors. The thin bezels (borders) around its screen accentuate its overall design, even when the screen is turned off. The television supports wall-mount and table-top installations. Unlike most TVs, the Nokia Smart TV 55 has a sleek centre stand, fitting the TV on narrow tables.

Samsung plans big comeback with premium smartphones in India

Eight years back, Samsung became the leader in the mobile phone industry in India with the roll out of “Galaxy S3” from its Noida facility.

Today, as the Indian smartphone market witnessed a modest 8 per cent (Year-on-Year) growth in 2019, the South Korean giant registered declining shipments among the top five brands.

The last eight years or so have seen Chinese invasion like never before (Chinese smartphone brands captured 72 per cent of the Indian market in 2019 compared to 60 per cent in 2018), launching devices with top-notch features while taking the average selling point (ASP) further down.

A premium player from the very beginning, Samsung faced the heat as smartphones became more affordable with each passing year, and players like Xiaomi and Vivo captured the affordable to mid-premium segments, forcing the company to launch online exclusive M-series in the budget segment and revamping the ‘A’ series in the mid-segment, which have so far been successful attempts.

Final Delhi polls turnout at 62.59%; EC says needed time for accuracy

The final voter turnout in Delhi assembly polls was 62.59 per cent, five per cent less than 2015, the Election Commission announced on Sunday evening nearly 24 hours after the polling ended, while the Aam Aadmi Party questioned the “delay”.

Delhi Chief Electoral Officer Ranbir Singh, however, said there was no unusual delay in announcing the final voter turnout as the returning officers were busy with scrutiny of data to ensure its accuracy.

After elections to the 70-member Delhi Assembly were held on Saturday, poll officials had said that there was a turnout of 61.46 per cent, subject to revision.

However, as there was no final word from the EC till 4 pm on Sunday, AAP chief and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal took to Twitter saying it was “absolutely shocking” that the poll panel was not coming out with the voting figures.

“What is EC doing? Why are they not releasing poll turnout figures, several hours after polling?” Kejriwal tweeted.

Tinder users appropriating dating app for political campaigning: Study

Although Tinder is a platform facilitating casual dating, some of the app’s nearly 50 million users around the world are employing it for multilevel marketing, political campaigning, and promoting local gigs, a new study says.

The study, published in the journal The Information Society, found that Tinder’s off-label use — a term borrowed from pharmacology describing when people use a product for something other than what the package says — appropriates its infrastructure, and sociocultural meanings.

“When people encounter a new technology, whether it’s a hammer or a computer, they use it in ways that fit their needs and lifestyle,” said study co-author Stefanie Duguay from Concordia University.

“However, once you buy a hammer, it doesn’t undergo regular updates or develop new features — apps do. They come with their own marketing, vision for use and sets of features, which they regularly update and often change in response to user activity,” Duguay explained.

No plan to hike Kona EV prices, despite proposed custom duty hike: Hyundai

Hyundai Motor India is not planning to hike prices of electric model Kona, despite expectations of a rise in the cost of the vehicle with the government proposing to increase customs duty on imported EVs, a top company official said.

The automaker, which is looking to drive in a mass market electric vehicle (EV) over the next two-three years, said it will look to increase localisation to keep the price of the model under check to offset impact of increased customs duty.

“Currently we are are importing some parts of the Kona Electric from South Korea. As per the new Budget announcement, the import duty will go up by 5 per cent… We understand the government’s push is towards Make in India so we will do more towards localisation of the product here,” Hyundai Motor India (HMIL) Managing Director and CEO SS Kim told PTI.

He admitted that the import duty increase will lead to rise in cost of the vehicle but “we will not pass it over to the customer and try to mitigate the impact by localising more and optimising our processes”.
