Deep breathing to beetroot juice, here’re a few ways to manage migraine

Migraines are a severe form of headache which can turn into a chronic problem. Its very different from a normal headache – it usually affects only one side of the head. Besides pain, migraine can also cause nausea and vomiting in extreme cases.

While there is a pill for every symptom of migraine, it just helps only for that particular migraine episode. and doesn’t address the root cause, Migraine is multifactorial, meaning there is no one factor that causes it. Hence, identification of the right trigger becomes primary to a successful migraine management.

Lifestyle triggers that cause migraine include lack of sleep, chronic stress, unhealthy gut — constipation, bloating, indigestion, candida overgrowth — acidity, exposure to strong smells/noise, dehydration, too much caffeine, vitamin deficiency — mostly magnesium and vitamin B13, B6 — prolonged exposure to sun and erratic meal timings.

Get protein from plants, not animals, to prolong your life: Study

Getting your protein from plants instead of animals could prolong your life, a new study suggests.

Researchers prospectively followed 70,696 Japanese men and women, average age 55, for an average of 18 years. All had completed detailed health and diet questionnaires, and none had a history of cancer or cardiovascular disease at the start. There were 12,381 deaths over the period.

After adjusting for age, sex, smoking, fat intake, body mass index, physical activity and other health and behavioural characteristics, they found that compared with the one-fifth of the group who ate the least plant protein, the fifth who consumed the most had a 27 percent lower rate of cardiovascular death, a 28 percent lower rate of death from heart disease and a 28 percent lower rate of stroke.

Substituting plant protein for red or processed meat was associated with lower mortality, though the researchers found no correlation between the amount of animal protein intake and mortality when considered alone. This is probably because most animal protein in the Japanese diet comes from fish, not red meat. Read Complete Article

Chandrayaan-2: No communication with Vikram lander yet, says Isro

The Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) said that it was yet to establish any communication with Chandrayaan-2’s lander, Vikram. On September 7, minutes before landing, Vikram, which was carrying a rover, Pragyan, went out of contact during its final descent, when it was just 2.1 km above the lunar surface.

“Vikram Lander has been located by the orbiter of Chandrayaan 2, but no communication with it yet. All possible efforts are being made to establish communication with lander,” said Isro.

While reports claim that the Vikram lander lies on the lunar surface as a single piece, unbroken, and it is in a tilted position following a hard landing, Isro officials did not confirm, stating that they were trying to establish communication with the lander. Read complete Article

With AI and automation growing, 120 million workers will need retraining

More than 120 million workers globally will need retraining in the next three years due to artificial intelligence’s impact on jobs, according to an IBM survey.

That’s a top concern for many employers who say talent shortage is one of the greatest threats to their organisations today. And the training required these days is longer than it used to be — workers need 36 days of training to close a skills gap versus three days in 2014, IBM notes in the survey.

Soft Skills

Some skills take longer to develop because they are either more behavioral in nature like teamwork and communication or highly technical, such as data science capabilities.

“Reskilling for technical skills is typically driven by structured education with a defined objective with a clear start and end,” Amy Wright, IBM managing director for talent, wrote in an email. “Building behavioral skills takes more time and is more complex.”

Behavioral skills, such as the ability to work well on a team, communication, creativity, and empathy are best developed through experience rather than structured learning programs like a webinar.

When employers say they’re facing a skills shortage, the first thing that comes to mind is coding experience or another advanced technical skill set. Yet, today, employers are calling for more emphasis on soft skills like communication skills, ethics and creativity rather than technical, a switch over the last few years, the survey notes. Behavioral skills are now seen as critical from digital and technical capabilities.

Soon, prosthetic hands may become ‘human-like’, get ability to sense things

Scientists have developed an electronic glove that can be worn over a prosthetic hand to provide human-like softness, warmth, appearance and sensory perception, such as the ability to sense pressure, temperature and hydration.

People with hand amputations experience difficult daily life challenges, often leading to lifelong use of prosthetic hands and services, according to researchers from Purdue University in the US, who developed the e-glove.

While a conventional prosthetic hand helps restore mobility, the new e-glove advances the technology by offering the realistic human hand-like features in daily activities and life roles, with the potential to improve their mental health and wellbeing by helping them more naturally integrate into social contexts.

The e-glove, described in the journal NPG Asia Materials, uses thin, flexible electronic sensors and miniaturised silicon-based circuit chips on the commercially available nitrile glove. Read Complete Article

Samsung Galaxy Fold’s success hinges on competitors and not sales

With Samsung Electronics Co finally launching its troubled Galaxy Fold, success for the $1,980 luxury handset may be measured not in how many it ships, but how many competitors decide to develop their own.

Pre-release enthusiasm for the device turned to exasperation in April when review units were found to have a severe defect related to the folding screen design. That made reviewers, analysts and investors rightfully skeptical about whether Samsung had gone too far and fallen off the bleeding edge of technology innovation. Three years earlier, the South Korean giant had grappled with exploding batteries in the Galaxy Note 7, ultimately discontinuing the device after a botched recall.

Management handled the setback much better this time, making the pragmatic decision to delay release of the Fold pending a redesign. Now that it’s available, the spotlight will once again be on the screen to see whether the design can hold up to daily wear and tear.

Joining the crowds scrutinizing every millimeter of the screen and its hinge will be executives at Huawei Technologies Co., Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi Corp. and even Apple Inc. While all are rivals to Samsung in smartphones, they’re also potential customers for its displays.

Samsung’s virtual lock on organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology over the past few years helped that division post an impressive run of operating profits as leading names, including Apple, clamored to get their hands on these brighter, lower-power displays. That star has since faded. The global smartphone industry is now in a funk, and Samsung isn’t alone in wanting to offer something fresh and exciting to juice sales.
